What do I think of this movie? Well considering I'm a big comic book fan, I think it was a pretty good movie. Except, I do have problems with it. Now besides the action, story, and character development, I really enjoy those. But what I really didn't like about this film is how they almost went over the top. Now I'm not saying it's a really bad film, and in fact it was really good. But some movies do have their flaws, and when it comes to movies based off from my favorite comic book series, then I have to nitpick.
This isn't going to be long, I just want to spread out my problems with this film. But don't worry, I will get to the good stuff later. Sounds like a deal? Ok, good. Well they had way too much comic book hints/winks/references, and I really enjoy that, and they were also placed in very well. But when it comes to the characters like Nick Fury and Black Widow, it kinda bugs me. Just the fact that they weren't needed, and the movie could've been fine without them.
And I hate how they get such a great actor like Mickey Rourke and put him in a villain role and just completely undevelop him for the rest of the movie. I wanted to see more of Whiplash/Ivan Vanko, but they had too many characters and a few too many subplots to explore that they couldn't him in a lot. And I kinda find Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) annoying at times, and Tony and Pepper's banter were ridiculous too because half the time I didn't understand what they were arguing half the time because I keep hearing their words over topping each other.
Another thing I didn't like so much is how Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) is way more developed than any of the characters in this movie. I understand this movie is about him, but it shouldn't be like that 24/7. Heck, he already has enough publicity by the characters in the film, he doesn't need anymore of it outside of it. Well, he kinda does, but let's just say I want to see the other characters too.
Other than those flaws, I really enjoyed this film. It's not as great or better than the first movie, but it's a whole lot better than "Spider-Man 3" when it comes to juggling the plotlines together and the characters too. Over all, I give this film a must-see rank for the general public. It could've been a lot better with what plot it wanted to go into and focus on more, but it did the best it can be and the visiuals were great and the acting is top-notch.
One line I really like and want to point out since director Jon Favreau pointed this out. When Tony was at Congess debating to give his suit to the military and denies to, Rhodey (Don Cheadle) comes in, and Tony says, "I didn't expect you to be here." And Rhodey replies, "I'm here, deal with it, let's move on." That line was suppose to reference the fact that Rhodey from the last movie (played by Terrence Howard) was replaced by Don Cheadle in this movie. Great and brilliant line, if you ask me.
Speaking of lines, I love the humor. But most of all the action sequences were really awesome. Move over Bayformers (a.k.a. Transformers) Iron Man is taking your spot, and it deserves it.
Also, I really like the dark tone in this movie. What I really like in the first movie was the dark tone, and how they balanced that with the action and humor of the story. Really great stuff.
Ok, ok, enough of my rambling. So go out to see this movie, it's worth watching and you don't want to miss out. By the way, stay after the end credits. There's a little surprise for the Marvel fans, and a cool cliffhanger of what's yet to come.
Well that's all I have to say, I hope you all enjoy my review, and I know I enjoyed writing it in the first place. Later!
