I don't know what to say about this film. Even though I seen 2 or 3 months ago, I still don't know what to say about this. Well here we go:
Well it wasn't bad, but it wasn't exactly good either. I have never read the books of Alice in Wonderland, and I don't know if I ever will. Not saying that this movie stops me to actually reading them, it's just I probably won't have the time to read them if I gotten the chance.
That being said, since I haven't read the books I really enjoyed what I seen from this. Except, there was a few things that made me go, "WTF?" But after all, it's a Tim Burton film. And I truly love his work, especially "Big Fish", that movie is one of my favorites.
For example, I didn't like Mad Matter's dance at the end of the movie. It just seemed out of place and very bizarre. Way too out of place for a Burton film, but after all he did made "Beetlejuice" and that movie was very bizarre, but it was still a good film for the family.
But I really dislike how parents bring their kids along to movies "like this". For example, there was a lot of kids that were being obnoxius when I went to see "Spider-Man 3" on opening day in theaters. But when I mean by that, this movie was not a kids film. It was more set in for the adult tone, but still friendly enough for teens to watch. I am not so bothered with these kids so much. I just ignore them and enjoy the movie. But sometimes it's hard to avoid, since there was a kid next to me talking a few times during the film.
I really like the special effects in this film, but it was more "eye-candy" for the audience since I think there was too much of it in this film. Which is not bad, it actually works very well. Especially this film looks great in 3-D, because that's the version I went to see in theaters.
I don't like the promotion and advertising for this film. It seemed like it was trying to get audience to watch the movie because of Johnny Depp was in it, and the movie wasn't all about his character. It was about Alice, and that's why her name is in the title, not the 'Mad Matter in Wonderland.'
Also, some of the performances was a bit blunt. I truly love Helena Bonham Carter portrayel as the Red Queen, and her performance sticks out more in my opinion. Mia Wasikowska as Alice, and Johnny Depp as Mad Hatter kind of seem out of place. But I don't know why, and I can't remember exactly. It's just I think Mia was a bit blunt in here role, and Johnny Depp was 'ok.'
I also like the scene where Alice has a flashback of the scenes that take place from the original Alice in Wonderland cartoon film, except they were in the version of live-action, which was very neat to see.
Over all, like I said I enjoyed it. At times it seemed boring, but those are the types of films I usually watch (I am weird, huh?). But maybe the pace could've been sped up more, but oh well. Go watch this movie, when you can. I'll give it a rental, but you all can do whatever you want with it.
