Let me start by saying I'm not a Star Trek fan. I was too young to catch on to most of the more popular TV shows and never really cared much about any other spinoffs or toys. What can I say? I'm a Star Wars nerd. Even though I knew almost nothing about the Star Trek universe, I still found the movie very enjoyable. Although the names and faces were all new to me, the story still translates well for anyone to relate to.
The movie starts before the original TV characters were born and changes the story that fans will know by introducing time travel. A ship full of angry aliens known as Romulans appears through a black hole and begins terrorizing the Federation for unknown reasons. History has been changed and the young Captain Kirk (who is not a captain because of a change of circumstances) that we all know has not become the hero he was meant to be. Will fate allow the course of history to fix itself or is have the evil Romulans destroyed the future? As you can probably tell, this is a pretty standard story told with Star Trek feel.
I found almost all aspects of the film very solid. The plot, acting, and special effects were all very well done and provided a great two hour experience. If anything, the plot moved a little quickly and, combined with the inconsistencies of time travel, might even be considered confusing. However, I personally didn't find anything hard to follow. The actor choices were perfect and I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the old Spock makes an appearance as himself from the future. I don't know anything about him, but he did a great job and didn't subtract quality in order to add nostalgia.
Overall, the movie had a great feel and I had a good time even though I was immersed in a universe that I knew nothing about. The story was universal and easy for anyone to appreciate. I highly recommend this movie to everyone and suggest that you see it in theaters if it's still possible.
