Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is a CGI movie based off a children's book of the same name. Personally, I had neither read nor heard of it until this movie came out, but if the book is anything like the movie, then it'll be a treat!
In my opinion, pretty much everything about this movie was good, making it highly comparable to the yet unbeaten kings of CGI animation: Pixar. The voice acting was superb, with every voice matching the character entirely. Special mention goes to Mr. T as Earl the policeman, who had many of the same 'Mr. T like mannerisms’, making it very funny. The humor is top notch, with literally a laugh every few minutes. This movie rarely gets slow and when it does it is usually only for a very short period.
The art style is slightly different to other CGI movies that we’ve recently had, in that all the characters, settings and objects are much more cartoonish and have a more 'animated’ feel. No character is made to look realistic, but this still works very well. Textures and environments are still quite realistic, (such as hair and clothes) showing that Sony Pictures really are capable of such things.
Some people may find the story silly, childish, or even simple, but I would have to disagree. Although the film does have a childlike quality to it and the basic plot is what you’d expect from a child’s books, it still has a depth that makes it enjoyable to both children and adults alike.
For those of you unfamiliar with the story, here is a basic synopsis:
A young inventor flint Lochwood has always wanted to be famous for his inventing and science. But alas, many of his inventions malfunction or don’t work quite as expected, making people believe him to be stupid and ‘lame’. This however all changes when he creates a machine that can turn water into food, just perfect for his town which only has sardines to eat. When he tries to make it work, however he accidentally shoots it up into the ozone layer, causing the machine to suck in rain and instead of water falling upon our heads, hamburgers and other tasty goodies take its place. Along the way he befriends a young perky, and secretly smart whether girl who helps promote his machine, but just when everything started going right for him and receives the fame and attention that he deserves, things start going wrong.
Now, I’m not going to reveal any more, but that is basically what happens. Tie this bizarre, but still enjoyable plot with great voice acting, hilarious jokes and great animation, you get a great film.
Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs is a film which will be enjoyed by all ages, and is up to par with pixar greats like The Incredibles, Up and Ratouille.
