Although this movie was hilarious, it, like Napoleon Dynamite (PG, 2004), lacked a strong, solid plot. It did have one, it just didn't appear for the first... half hour? There were jokes about nerds, jocks, homosexuals, sex, little people, and plain old slapstick stuff. There were some classic David Spade and Jon Heder stuff too, which I was happy about. All of this made the movie great, if you're able to stomach it all. I know quite a few people (SilkyBob, that means you) who wouldn't understand this film, as with Napoleon Dynamite, but they don't see the point. The Benchwarmers begins when three friends, Gus (Rob Schneider), Richie (David Spade), and Clark (Jon Heder) decide to play baseball (for Richie and Clark's first times, because of their childhood exclusions). A group of tough kids decide that their team wants to practice on the field and picks a fight with the three. When Gus challenges the kids to a scrimage and singlehandedly beats them (Richie and Clark basically just screw around and score a few laughs on the audience), they attract the attention of Mel (Jon Lovitz), a nerd who grew up to become a gazillionaire. Mel and his geeky son, Nelson (Max Prado), hatch a plan where the new baseball team of Gus, Richie, and Clark, now named the Benchwarmers because of their tough childhoods, will travel in a round-robin tournament and challenge all the particularly mean little league teams. Yeah, this is an underdog story, with a bit of a twist, but I won't reveal it. See this movie if you liked Napoleon Dynamite and/or Kicking & Screaming (PG, 2005).
