The movie Marie Antoinette tells the story of the young queen of France (Kirsten Dunst). Throughout the movie, we go through the different stages of the young, naive, and misunderstood queen. From her early betrothal and marriage to Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman) at the tender age of fifteen, to her reign as queen at nineteen, to the fall of the French monarchy. We watch Marie make mistakes, try to support her family and country, and grow as a person. By the end of the film, you really get to know her character, and I even pitied her a little because of her youth and perseverance. She tries to take on the responsibility of a whole country when she only wants to have fun! Marie Antoinette brings up some very interesting topics. Did she really say, 'Let them eat cake," to her poor, starving subjects? This movie doesn't seem to think so, but there is no proof to either side. I loved all of the extravagant costumes and sets, and the movie was actually filmed in Versaille, where the film is supposed to take place. One flaw I found in the movie was that it was somewhat repetitive. We see endless scenes of her daily routine, which is to get the point across that it's a boring process. However, seeing those scenes was boring for me as well. In summation, I'd say this is a very interesting film to see and learn about the teenage queen of France.
