Although it felt a little like The Matrix (R, 1999), I really liked this movie. It focuses around Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson), two of the survivors of a supposed contamination, a apocalypse-type disease that left only a few million people alive in 2019. In order to be safe from the disease, the community lives in a huge complex of buildings and is completely monitored by guards and computers. Men and women are forced away from each other (their sex drives eliminated), and no children can be found (no one even knows what a 'child' is). However, Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta have decided to disobey these rules of proximity and have become friends. Recently, Lincoln Six Echo has been having strange, recurring nightmares and wants answers to questions no one has ever asked before ('Why are we here?', 'Why can't we leave?', etc.). One day, unexpectedly, Lincoln Six Echo's world is turned upside down when Jordan Two Delta is told she must leave the facility immediately. The 'Island' is a legendary place that only selected 'lottery winners' can visit, and Jordan Two Delta has just won this mandatory lottery. Lincoln Six Echo decides to explore areas in the building where he's not allowed, and finds something horrible. He sees people who have previously won the lottery being killed and opened [surgically] to have their organs removed. Realizing there is no 'Island,' Lincoln Six Echo quickly tries to rescue Jordan Two Delta and escape the horrid prison (metaphorically speaking). After finding the exit, the pair meets up with McCord (Steve Buscemi), Lincoln Six Echo's old friend, and are educated about the way the world really works. It's funny how un-streetsmart they really are (kind of like in Elf)! Now knowing a terrible truth (which I won't reveal to you), Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta set out on a mission to free their kind and restore justice. You'll like how this movie turns out, believe me. Anyways, the antagonist of the film and boss of the facility, Merrick (Sean Bean), is a really interesting character who makes this film very exciting. I also enjoyed Djimon Hounsou's acting, as he played the role of the tough-as-nails mercenary, Albert Laurent; what a great round character! So, why this film's not for kids: one, because there's a sex scene (between Ewan and Scarlett, but not much is revealed), two, because there's violence, and three, because there's some swearing (not much, but enough). Well, this movie's interesting, and I think it deserves a healthy renting.
