I really liked this movie, and I didn't even have to know much about the X-Men comics! There wasn't much action in this movie, but when there was, it was pretty cool. Well, since I just told you that this movie is mostly about the plot, here it is. The main struggle in this movie is actually a political one: concerning the threat of the newly-evolved mutants' affecting the safety of humans. However, this movie focuses on a teenager named Marie, a.k.a. Rogue (Anna Paquin), and a mysterious man named Logan, a.k.a. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Rogue, a teenage mutant, discovers her power after putting the boy who first kissed her in a coma (accidentally, naturally). Disturbed and confused, the young girl runs away from home, where she meets a strange cage fighter [mutant] that can extend adamantite claws from his fists (Logan). After hitching a ride with the mysterious man (against his will), the odd couple are attacked by a violent mutant known as Sabretooth (Tyler Mane). Fortunately, another set of mutants, Ororo Munroe, a.k.a. Storm (Halle Berry), and Scott Summers, a.k.a. Cyclops (James Marsden), arrives just in time to fight off the predator. Storm and Cyclops take Rogue and Logan to meet Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), a wise, crippled, telepathic mutant who runs a not-so-ordinary school for mutants. Xavier explains to Logan (Rogue is enrolled in classes) that a mutant who can maneuver metal, Eric Lensherr, a.k.a. Magneto (Ian McKellen), sent Sabretooth to capture Logan and Rogue, for reasons that aren't revealed until the end (so I won't give them away). Magneto is about as old and experienced as Xavier, but is against humanity, for the reason that his family was destroyed by the Nazis (for being Jewish) when he was young; and that some humans (he thinks most) want to exterminate mutants, or at least take away many rights and privileges as citizens. This is why Xavier has taken on the task of protecting the innocent from Magneto, he will 'always be there'. However, Magneto's latest scheme is one of his most devious ones yet; will the Professor [Xavier] be able to uncover the plot and foil it? You have to see this movie to find out. X-Men is not great for kids because it's a little scary/disturbing at some points and there is a bit of language (not enough to matter though). Buy this movie; there's no other option; plus X2 [X-Men 2] is also good, but requires you to see this one first. You can't get enough X-Men!
