Surprisingly enjoyable, this movie caught me off guard. The beginning was fairly slow, and I didn't think it was going to turn out so well. By the end, I had realized that I was definitely wrong. There were quite a few funny moments, especially if you enjoy movies (wait, that's me!) There are quite a few references to old movies, including the classic James Cagney gangster films (which I have yet to review). It begins with the big mob boss, Momo (Ron Karabatsos), dying from a heart attack during his surprise birthday party. After his death, his work is given to the next in line, and a big shift in power takes place. Chili Palmer (John Travolta), a loan shark and tough guy, is particularly caught up in this transition. His big rival, Ray Barboni (Dennis Farina), becomes his new boss, and sends him from Miami to Los Angeles to collect a debt from someone that owes a lot of money (David Paymer). Along the way, Chili takes on other jobs, and winds up meeting Harry Zimm, the producer of small-time horror flicks. Liking Zimm's work, Chili's love for movies brings him into the producing business too, and things kind of spiral out of control from there; especially thanks to Los Angeles gangster/producer Bo Catlett (Delroy Lindo). This movie moves very quickly, and can get confusing because of all the names being thrown around at once. There's a nice touch of humor, although not everyone will catch all of it. Here's a great film that's worth a rent whenever you're feeling bored.
