This movie just did not capture the meaning behind George Orwell's classic and powerful book. If you are not familiar with the novel, it is about a futuristic society where all are equal and under the watchful eye of the government, which destroys its enemies, persecutes traitors, and even erases the past. Though most follow the government because of its vast control and power, Winston Smith (John Hurt) goes against it, of course in secret. He eventually falls in love with Julia (Suzanna Hamilton), who detests the government just as much. Both actors were solid, but neither did anything to really amaze me. If you have not read the book, do not watch this film; it would be nearly impossible to understand. There are no references to what is going on throughout the movie, and it would be very hard to follow. This film was also surprisingly boring; the only part that really captivated me was when Winston was being tortured towards the end. The reason for the R rating is the vast amount of nudity; if this offends you, don't watch it. Anyways, if you can read, I would recommend the great novel over this poor film any day of the week. It was just boring and unspectacular.
