This movie was very funny and captured the average kid's views about things, but otherwise was a little odd. I'm sure that all adults (mostly the ones who actually celebrate it) will be able to relate to this movie from their childhood. This movie definitely captures the average kid's emotions around Christmas (and even the rest of the year). I mean, dares, the idea of Santa, and many other things are described and portrayed perfectly, and I was amazed at how much this movie related to me (even though 1983 was way before my time)! A Christmas Story is about the young Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley). For Christmas, he wants a Daisy Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action BB Gun (whoa, what a name!). However, everyone says that he won't be getting one because 'he'll shoot his eye out'! Desperate, Ralphie tries... dozens?... of ideas, and keeps failing. There are other plots too, involving a freaky bully named Scut Farkus (Zack Ward), Ralphie's crazy parents (Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillion), and a slip of the f-word (oops). This is almost a great family movie, except for a little swearing, and a little bit of violence. I would pretty much recommend this movie to anyone over the age of 11. There is a little bit of racism towards Asians, but back then, not everything was politically correct all the time. Whatever. This is a great Christmas movies; one of my favorites for sure.
