162 Movie Reviews
I think this is probably the best movie in the Star Wars series (they're all very close). I love the battles, especially the attack on the first Death Star. There were great characters, but the acting wasn't perfect. The special effects on the old versions of this film aren't as good as they are these days, so I would recommend getting the newer, digitally-enhanced DVDs. This movie is great for viewers of all ages because there is the perfect balance of talking scenes and fighting scenes. The plot seems generic because there are so many spin-offs of it today. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is an orphan living with his Uncle Owen (Phil Brown) and Aunt Beru (Shelagh Fraser) on the secluded desert planet of Tatooine. When a battle between the oppressive Empire and Rebel spies occurs nearby, Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) is taken captive by the sinister Darth Vader (performed by David Prowse and voiced by James Earl Jones). Before she is taken hostage, she is able to program the small astro droid R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) to flee the doomed ship and seek out a man named Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness). With his/its/I don't know... robot friend, C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), R2-D2's escape pod lands on Tatooine, and fate causes him to run into Luke, who becomes the pair's master. After a tragedy at home causes Luke to be pulled into the war (not that he didn't want to fight), Obi-Wan teaches Luke of the Force, a magical substance that causes the entire universe to function and live. The Jedi, an extinct race of warriors and keepers of the peace (before the Empire), were able to use the force and bend its will to their needs. Obi-Wan is one of the last of these Jedi, and is willing to teach Luke how to help. R2-D2's message for Obi-Wan states that the war is getting out of hand and his assistance (after many decades of isolation) is needed. First, the group will need a transport to reach the planet of Alderaan, which is how they come to meet the tough smugglers, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca the Wookiee (Peter Mayhew). When the crew reaches the destination and finds an uncharted asteroid field where there should be a planet, they realize that the Empire has acquired a weapon so powerful that no opposition will ever stand a chance. Is there a way to stop the Empire and restore peace and justice to the galaxy? I would buy this movie if I were you. The acting isn't perfect, and neither are the outdated special effects, but you have to look at the big picture to see how great this movie truly is.
