Ignoring how cheesy and old it is, I enjoyed this film. It's definitely an acquired taste, especially because it was filmed in black and white. For the adventure, there's some piracy, swashbuckling, and mystery of the Caribbean. Set back before America was a country, this movie begins in England, right after a rebellion against the cruel King James (Vernon Steele). Dr. Peter Blood (Errol Flynn), a kind, witty (and don't forget neutral) doctor, is caught helping wounded rebels, and is arrested. At his unfair trial, Dr. Blood realizes that the King of England doesn't deserve the crown after all. However, this realization came too late, and Dr. Blood and the leftovers from the executions are banished to the Americas to be sold as slaves. Once in the American town of Port Royal, they meet the harsh Col. Bishop (Lionel Atwill) and his kind, lovely niece, Arabella Bishop (Olivia de Havilland), who takes in many of the men out of pity. Hating his bondage, Blood gains favor from the blundering Governor Steed (George Hassell), organizes an escape, and becomes a pirate of the Caribbean, taking his revenge on the terrible king of England however he can. Also in this movie is Basil Rathbone as the pirate Captain Levasseur. Now, this movie is very old, and is probably going to be considered lame by the average viewer. I guess you won't want to be seeing this movie, but come on, it might be worth a rent! If I lived through it, so can you!
