It's hard to appreciate this as much as I should because as the release date implies, this movie is very old. It is in black and white, and a classic; the best of its time. However, today's standards render this movie obsolete, as computers take over all aspects of special effects. I'm sure that most people today would just laugh or yawn at what frightened people in the earlier 1900s. What these people have to realize is that technology back then wasn't even close to being invented yet; movies weren't even that old! Understanding this, the movie is spectacular and exciting. In this story, the reckless film director, Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong), has obtained a map to an island unknown to any 'white man' and has decided to shoot his latest film there. For reasons unknown to his abnormally large crew (to sail the ship to the island), Carl also brings along a lot of weapons and powerful knockout-gas bombs (or whatever you call them). Because of this, Carl needs to set sail as soon as possible. Things get complicated when he finds out that he doesn't have a female lead, so he quickly goes out to find one on the streets. As fate would have it, Carl runs into the lovely Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) and convinces her to join him. What Ann doesn't know is that this will be the biggest adventure of her lifetime, one that will follow her back to New York and cause horrible damage! That is, a terrible beast lives on the island, one that keeps the natives gripped in a horrible terror. They only know it as 'Kong.' When Kong sees Ann, he, well, he falls in love with her and decides to protect her at all costs. Poor Ann! At least she falls in love with the strong, but not very smart Jack Driscoll (Bruce Cabot)... Anyways, the special effects consist of stop-motion claymation and large models that look downright offensive. I was also a little annoyed that herbivore dinosaurs were eating people.... If you're not prejudiced against old movies, you should rent this movie; you'll get a kick out of it.
