Wow, although it fell short of my expectations, Call of Duty 3 was an amazing game! Too bad it lasted me only one weekend! Well, it doesn't help that I played for about ten hours straight (and another four the next day... guess that proves how fun this is).
The graphics are better, although there are more glitches and errors in AI since the last game. For example, try walking over an AI player while they're lying down (unless you're prone to seizures!), and you'll see what I mean, in a very bouncy way. Also, players can run into obstacles and get stuck there or float away, which means that human players have to kill themselves and AI players get achieve god status and become invincible... those are only a few of the problems I noticed.
During the campaign, what annoys me is that the cutscenes are much more cinematic than last time, and you lose almost all control over your character when they occur (they can't even be skipped!).
I do enjoy the multiplayer, when it works. The Ranked matches take forever for me to load. Well, they might not even work, but I don't want to wait around for 10 minutes to find out. Oh well, I'm sure there'll be another multiplayer patch coming out soon (as there was with Call of Duty 2).
Unlike the last game, this Call of Duty sequel has vehicles, cooler weapons, new game variants including a territorial 'War' mode, bigger maps, and support for up to 24 players per game in online/offline multiplayer.
You can now pick up some sweet mounted machine guns, including the FG42 and Bren LMG. It's always awesome to run up to a crate/stand, set one of those up, and mow down everyone in sight, especially with 24 people in a game and bullets/rockets flying by.
To improve the actual combat, you can now 'cook off' the potato masher / pineapple grenades [waiting before throwing them]. With this comes the ability to 'attempt' to pick up and throw them back, but that definitely won't happen in multiplayer. I could ramble on forever about the multiplayer, but would get boring.
The single player is more diverse than the last game, but at the same time easier and glitchier. You get to use a tank more often, and you also get to try your hand at various field guns and mortars.
The game also encourages you more to become efficient with multiple weapons, as you start with different weapons, run out of ammo quickly, and receive Xbox 360 Achievements for completing levels with different types of weapons (including an Achievement for not firing a single round the entire level, which I also earned).
Speaking of Achievements, I would like to say that this game has many more Achievements than the last one, and doesn't just give you one for each level you beat on Veteran mode (which has become a lot harder, because AI enemies seem to be able to shoot through walls).
As far as the story goes, you pick up from where you left off in COD2, and get to play/assist the American, British, French, Canadian, and Polish troops, whereas in the last game you only got to be American, British, or Soviet Russian.
The gameplay is a little more involved (aside from the stupid cutscenes), and makes you actually go through a bunch of motions whenever you have to plant a sticky bomb or pull a lever or something. I'm okay with this, it's an interesting change for the better.
One part of the campaign that annoys me is how much the computers repeat themselves when you don't do what they say right away ('Go over there!... Go over there!... Go over there!').
Well, I think I had better cut myself off here, or else I'll go on forever and hurt my hand. In conclusion, this is a great game, given an appropriate age level, and is worth buying
