This is a perfect example of what RTS's should look like.
Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings is one of the best RTS's once you really get into the game. It looks graphically improved and has smoother gameplay than its predecessors, (Age of Empires, and Age of Empires: Rise of Rome Expansion). There are three styles of architecture present in the game - Eastern, Middle Eastern and Western European which no doubt makes the game more realistic. The simple click and control of your people add simplicity to the gameplay.
The game adds tons of new features: new civilizations; with strengths and weaknesses for each one, new unique units for every civilization built at the castle, the option of having a mass number of up to 200 hundred units per game, modes like Campaign, Random Map, King of the Hill and many more, having villagers retreat into their town center or castle during an attack on your civilization, have units garrison into a Battering Ram when attacking an enemy, and many more new additions that makes Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings, stand out from all the other RTS's.
Now don't get me wrong, there were plenty of other outstanding RTS's that were out when Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings was first released, like Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun. But Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings has a smooth online gameplay, a simple and easy controls scheme, and the graphics, are defiantly up with the top. The game shows us how good RTS's were when they were created and released, and also makes a gaming experience that we will never forget. Thank you, Ensemble Studios.
