The console versions of Quantum of Solace were all FPS's, so the obvious move is to make the DS version an FPS aswell, right? NOPE. Some GENIUS decided to make it a game where you hold the DS like a book, and make it almost completely touch-screen based. Yet another exploitation of the DS's abilities.
This game was developed by Vicarious Visions, a well-known developer. They have made many Spiderman games, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, Crash Bandicoot GBA games, Spyro, Doom 3 and almost all of the Guitar Hero games. So they're known for their ability to make good games.
So, what exactly went wrong with this game? They tried to use the touch-screen WAY too much. You use it for way too many things, and most of the time it's completely unnecessary. For example, you find items inside suitcases randomly found throughout levels. You can find Health, Ammo and Upgrades.
When you press Enter, it doesn't go straight to the newest level like you would expect it to be, it starts up the first level. I was confused, but what I didn't notice, was a Menu about 1/8th the size of the screen where I got to choose the level.
To kill your enemies, you can either shoot them, or run up close to them and have a Melee fight. The shooting barely ever hits, and the Melee is INCREDIBLY flawed. My left punch doesn't work at all. I'm serious, left to right, it doesn't respond. What a piece of junk. Most of my punches also get blocked so I might as well back up, and shoot them in the face. I have less chance of getting my butt kicked that way.
So, how do you get upgrades in the game? Well, in the suitcases you find throughout the levels, you can find Cards and Poker Chips. The Poker Chips you can trade in for Bond points. With Bond points you can buy new guns and upgrades to your character. You can equip cards to yourself during the game, usually they can upgrade your Maximum Health, increase your damage and increase your accuracy.
Although I haven't finished the game, it seems REALLY short. After finishing the Tutorial, the game was 8% complete. That's insane! It should have been 2% finished at the highest.
Reviews for Quantum of Solace (NDS) have been very spread. PGNx gave it an 8/10, calling it a 'solid action game on the Nintendo DS.' Although Modojo gave it a 4/10 saying 'Do yourself a favor and go see the flick instead.' That's harsh, but basically true. So, what's my opinion on this game? Well, let's see...
BUY IT, BORROW IT, OR BREAK IT?
This game sucks. It has so many glaring problems. The graphics are mediocre. It's incredibly short. The melee's useless, and the gun's very inaccurate. It's nearly impossible to kill an enemy while also keeping most of your health. It doesn't get interesting quick enough, if at all. BREAK THIS PILE OF JUNK.
