Chrono Trigger DS is finally here! Even if it is a port of the SNES game, it adds loads of new features. But are they really needed? Or were they just thrown on for a quick buck? Read on to find out more.
Chrono Trigger was originally released in North America and Japan in 1995 on the SNES. The game was a huge success, selling more than 2 million copies. So Square, (knowing they had a hit on their hands), released the game on the PS1 in 1999, and then again in 2001, on a PS1 compilation disc along with Final Fantasy IV in 'Final Fantasy Chronicles.' Then in July 2008, Square-Enix announced that they were planning to bring Chrono Trigger to the DS. Many, many fans then pooped their pants out of excitement.
The game's story is pretty epic. I'm not gonna say much about the storyline, but basically you play as Crono, the hero. You find other characters than can help you. But so far I've only met Frog, Marle and Lucca. Lucca makes a transportation machine, but when Marle gets into it, it malfunctions, and creates a time portal to a different era. Crono then goes into the Time Portal to save her. An epic time-travelling adventure begins to unfold... Yeah, I suck at explaining stories, so what? =D
The battle system is pretty awesome. There's both random battles, and battles that you can choose to avoid, or to go into. So if you're in a hurry, they don't waste your time by giving you stupid battles. The Battle System itself is cool aswell. You can use your regular attack, or you can use your Techs. You can either use the Techs by yourself, or you can use team-work to beat the hell out your opponents.
There's loads of awesome mini-games at the start too. They take you away from the seriousness from the game. The festival's a perfect start to the game, because there's loads of stuff you can do that doesn't add to the story. They include dancing to caveman music, fighting a huge robot, returning a cat to it's owner, and drinking as much as you can (my best is 5!. They add a bit of variety to the game aswell.
All of the bonus features in the DS version, are:
- It features the Animated cutscenes from the PS1 version.
- There's an Arena mode, where you can raise your own monsters.
- Updated, more accurate translation.
- A new ending, making it 13.
- A new dungeon.
- An optional SNES play mode.
The graphics in the game were absolutely awesome for a SNES game, and they seem awesome for a 2D game on the DS aswell. The graphics are what you would expect from an RPG, and the sprites look awesome. There's a minor problem that I have, but it's incredibly minor. When Crono's running, his legs look really short, and he looks awkward when he's running. This detracts nothing from the game though.
BUY OR NOT TO BUY: Chrono Trigger's an absolute must-own for any RPG fan, or anyone who loves epic storylines. The new features should also attract people who own older versions. BUY IT, NOW!
