I'm New, and What I Think So Far

Tue Jul 28, 2009 8:50 pm EDT

First of all, I think this site is amazing. I really am amazed at all the work done on here and there are a ton of features and content on here I'm gonna take a look at.

What I like most about this site is how the site is powered by thoughts and information from users, and that it's custom built. So awesome job, there are some glitchs though. One is on some forms like updating your profiles, if you use the enter button nothing gets updated and you have to click the button itself.

Oh, and the design is really nice too. Kinda too simplistic for me but I like it, and it loads fast for that reason even though any design can load as fast as you want.

Welcome to The Biasphere!  Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you liked what you saw.  A lot of hard work has gone into the site over the years.

The Biasphere's design was actually very carefully planned.  I can give you a little breakdown of why the site layout looks the way it does.

The column template was important to me for accessibility.  The site is designed to fit even an 800x600 resolution screen.  The simplistic black and white look came from Ultimate Reviews.  I've simplified it even more since the Ultimate Reviews layout was so laggy.  I am still thinking of ways to put in color to make the pages more attractive.

The "bubbles" wrapper around every page on the site has a very important symbolic meaning.  Since The Biasphere is a social networking site that encourages the sharing of opinions and ideas, the bubbles are symbols for people and ideas.  The fact that they're merging together and forming one big mass is also symbolic.  The font I chose for the header fits in with this "bubble" feel as well.

Overall, I would agree that the design is very simplistic.  However, as more and more AJAX features make the site heavier on the browser, it is important that the template is as light as possible for maximum compatibility and ease of use.

Wow Tusserte, didn't even realize that about the header but I really like the simple look, and felt it had some kind of power, especially the bubbles background. I'm pretty sure I related that to people coming together like in a social network, although it looks more like a cloud to me.

Ajax and other things does slow the page a lot, and I like how you didn't use images for the buttons. CSS can be powerful so a good idea of taking advantage of that. Try using border-radius, it's part of CSS3 but it's getting a good amount of support and degrades well.

I agree, accessibility is a very important point although many people avoid it. One thing I would use though, is instead of leaving empty anchor tags (<a></a>) with no text (I noticed it in some places, not all), try putting the same text that is in the image and use text-indent: -6000em; or something similar. Display block does not work well for SEO, so don't use extra spans and such for that.

Again though, awesome job I do wish to do some more posting around here. Also it's cool to meet you again with a new site, brings back memories but most importantly I can see clearer how far we all came. Imagine, from Freewebs and a site builder!
